Cheltenham Racecourse, known as the ‘The Home of Jump Racing’ hosts an annual horse racing festival. Everyone from breeders and stable staff, to trainers and jockeys dream of having the winning horse, knowing that a victory at Cheltenham secures their place in the sport’s hall of fame. Competing at one of the most iconic racecourses in the industry encompasses the thrill of the competition and the possibility of the win for racers and spectators alike.
The event’s broadcasters, ITV Racing required a 32 metre, free‑standing 3D wire‑camera tower system deployable across several of the UK’s most prestigious racecourses. Seeking a rigging partner with engineering expertise and experience in the design and installation of tower systems systems & temporary structures, they chose our specialist team at West End Rigging.
Building and erecting such high towers and tower base detail into an already busy and overcrowded racecourse area, that was surrounded by other vendors and suppliers we had to makes sure that all of our work, precision lifting operations, plant and access at each tower location within a live racecourse presented unique challenges — we had to accommodate public safety, existing structures, other services, topography, and ground surveys across multiple terrains.
Leveraging our team’s experience in engineering temporary structures and free standing tower systems, WER were able to delivered a safe, compliant, and fully operational camera‑tower system on time for race day. The project was an opportunity for us to operate in a fast-paced, public environment while showcasing our expertise in engineering temporary structures for 3D wire camera systems and specialist cameras.
From design to installation, we ensured the system met the highest standards, enhancing the broadcast coverage of one of the most thrilling events in the racing calendar.
Since then, West End Rigging has designed and installed these systems at Aintree and York racecourses, as well as in diverse locations worldwide — from sun-baked deserts to snow-covered peaks.
